People with alcohol and substance abuse disorders could also suffer from comorbid depression and may benefit from TMS treatment. For an effective and long-lasting recovery, diagnosis and treatment of mental health issues is essential.

Managing mood swings brought on by alcohol and drug withdrawal may be aided by TMS Therapy. One of the most difficult stages of recovery is substance detoxification. Receiving TMS during detoxing may improve mood and encourage adherence to addiction treatment.

According to Recovery, D. (2024), researchers administered 24 TMS treatments to individuals in substance misuse rehabilitation in 2019. Twenty sessions during the first two weeks and two weekly sessions during the last two weeks. Of the 16 people who finished the research, about 56 percent had a negative urine drug test and experienced much fewer cravings for drugs, less severe withdrawal symptoms, and lower levels of worry and sadness.

A rTMS treatment plan consisting of three daily sessions separated by one hour was employed in another 2019 investigation. Over the course of two weeks, the therapy was administered for ten days. The nine participants who completed the study reported spending 78% less money on cocaine and using the drug for fewer days.
